Marey-Spice
Meet Marey-Spice, a BLM Mustang who came to live at the Horse House the end of October. She is 10 years old and was purchased by us with private funds from one of the local horse auctions.
Marey-Spice was standing in the pens under saddle, and we noticed that many people were walking by her making negative comments about her because she is a Mustang. Mustangs carry a stereotype of being a horse that cannot be easily worked with or trained, but in the vast majority of cases, a Mustang is a sure-footed horse that can be trained and is very willing, just like any other breed of horse.
Even the United States Boarder Patrol is starting to use Mustangs for their boarder patrol work. Mustangs tend to be very hardy and can withstand the rigors of long days and hard work, as well as the terrain that the boarder patrol has to ride over when they work. Mustangs are very aware of their surroundings, moreso than other breeds due to their once wild statuses where they had to protect themselves and their herds from predators. They notice movement from a distance that helps the boarder patrol locate illegal aliens crossing over into United States territory.
Since Marey-Spice has been with us, she has participated willingly as a therapy visitation horse at an assisted living center in Alliance, Nebraska (above) and is regularly worked with in Hastings so that she becomes accustomed to her handlers and remains a very willing parnter.
